Jamestown

I noticed this game on Steam while looking at the price for Dungeon Siege III.
The first thing I noticed was the graphics, it had a retro look to it but also what looked like a bullet hell game. I'm a huge fan of bullet hell games getting into it after playing the Touhou series and moving onto things like Progear and Death Smiles by CAVE. It was only £6.29 for me so I thought, why not, it looks interesting and I do like bullet hell games.

Started off with the second level of difficulty and found it not too hard, only to be stopped at level 5 being told I have to play all the levels on the next level of difficulty to continue. So I went back to the start and played all the levels on a harder difficulty. I was still enjoying it and really enjoyed the last level the most.

The music is beautiful for each level and as you get further in the game sounds more and more epic. The background art is also stunning and really well done, reminding me of the style of old bullet hell games.

The game has an interesting mechanic called "Vaunt", when you destroy an enemy depending on the enemy they drops these cog like items, when you gain enough to fill your bar at the top you can activate Vaunt mode, for a while you create a barrier which blocks bullets, causes your weapon to deal double damage and doubles the amount of points you gain.
The bar slowly decreases over time but can be increased by gaining more cogs allowing you to keep it going and gain more points.

Another thing to spent loads of time doing is the challenge levels where you have things like survive for X seconds or gain X points within a time limit and are quite challenging to do.

If you enjoy bullet hell games I highly recomend this, but if you're the type of person who doesn't like repeating the same levels over and over again, this probably isn't for you.

  5. Nice find. Although I'd still prefer touhou as my pick for bullet hell games (mainly cause I already own them all and haven't completed them all on lunatic mode yet)
